Working the quest lines is a very effective method for leveling up
This section is mostly for reference, as it is meant to give you an idea of how quickly (and at higher levels how slowly) your character is likely to advance in levels because the game, and to a limited extent the character development in it, is level based, which naturally means XP based. Obtaining XP is accomplished through quests and player actions, and manifests its application in the game through level-based item limits for the most part, and can be effected by cumulative bonus increases that are item and structure based. It also includes premium characters who earn improved XP and cash - read the related sections later in the guide for more information....
One of the interesting aspects of leveling up is that when you reach a new level the game fires off a quote at you that often pays a sort of homage to that level, though not always, and these quotes are generated by specific characters and in their voices, even when you are not actively using that character or have it as an accessible one at that specific moment! The Levels break out as follows (so far):
| Level | Required XP / Level Reward | Character Quote |
| 1 | 40 XP / 0 Donuts | No Quote for this Level |
| 2 | 75 XP / 1 Donut | Bart: "Wow, you put the house down where it told you to." |
| 3 | 85 XP / 1 Donut | Apu: "You have been reincarnated to the next level. Thank you, tap again." |
| 4 | 120 XP / 1 Donut | Homer: "Woo-hoo! I bet leveling up is always gonna be this easy." |

Note 1: The required XP for each level was obtained from the official Simpson's Tapped Out Wiki which is the most accurate source available to us...
Note 2: There is no quote for Level 1 (the transition in leveling happens so fast that the quotes for Levels 1 and 2 would happen at the same time anyway), if you pay attention to the context for each of the Level quotes you may be surprised to discover that they are, for the most part, editorial comments on subjects that range from the effort you put in to reach that point or the reward that you received for doing so...
